FM converters, how well do they work?

Really thinking about buying the alpine W988J, straight from japan. Only problem is I still listen to the radio a lot, how well do the fm converters work. I have been hearing that they only pick up one side of the frequencies, such as high or low. How much of each side will they pick up?

 
If you are rely into radio and are concerned with not getting all your signals I would not get it but I have heard that some of the fm converters do work rely well but others have said that they can only pick up stations that are close to them like rely close.

The problem is, the Japanese FM band is narrower than ours is...read this:
