Flutes for School Band??

My little cousin is wanting to join the school band. She is interested in playing the flute. The flute the school has available for purchase is a Yamaha YFL-200AD. The flute costs a little over $800 from the school. $800 is too much money to spend on a flute that she may not even want to play once she begins to learn how to play.

I am wondering if anyone on here knows if there is any cheaper flutes that would work well for a beginner? Her band teacher says that we should look for a good beginner flute that has at least a 1 year warranty on it. I found several different brands on ebay such as Cecilio, Merano, Lj Huthchen, Gemeinhardt, and Cibali. Are any of these brands decent? Her band teacher said that most flute repair people won't work on flutes that are foreign made and of low quality because they do not last. I know absolutely nothing about flutes so any help will be greatly appreciated.

I agree with this. My cousin wanted to start playing the guitar, so my uncle bought him a really nice beginner guitar. 4 months into learning, he decided he wanted to play drums instead. Needless to say, my uncle had to sell the guitar to get a drum set.

I didn't pay attention to where you are located, but I am sure you can find an instrument rental store and rent one for a few months. Good luck!

That's what i did when i got into band as a little kid, my parents rented me a trumpet, but whats weird is I rented my trumpet from my school, but i know there are instrument rentals so that's what i would do, if she likes it buy her a good flute, just don't let her go to band camp...LOL...

i rented mine from a local shop and when i wanted to buy it they allowed 12 months rent to go towards the instrament (trombone)
