Floor Deadening Advice

I've finally got some money together to deaden my floor in my Sport Trac. So with $200 should I put down some SS Sludge and then a single layer of mat over top of that? Or should I put down multiple layers of Damplifier?

My doors are already done.

I'd really like to know as well. Is there a reason why you're going with the SS Sludge? You want the thickness? I was thinking of going with the Spray Spectrum.

I don't plan to gut the WHOLE interior so I don't want to have to deal with overspray.

Over at secondskin's forums I got a recommendation from Fruityloops (sp?) to do 2 layers of Damplifier, he didn't really say any reason why though.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

well first off you don't want to put mat over sludge. put the sludge over mat. i had a terrible experience with sludge but i recommend damplifier. 2 layers and then get some spectrum and spray the hard to get areas and a coat over the mat.

Or just do it el cheapo and get Peel & Seal from HD or Menards. I've had no problems with it on vertical surfaces, so it'll be fine for a floor. And no overspray issues.

Definitely liquid over mat, if you want to use both. In my experience, using both really does work better than either one alone, but that's bordering on the compulsive.

It's my understanding that what is added to make sludge thick isn't as effective the fillers used in Spectrum. Multiple coats of Spectrum should be somewhat more effective than a single coat of sludge, but I'd guess by only a small amount. You can apply liquids with a brush to avoid the masking you will have to do if you are going to spray. You'll get a smoother finished surface if you spray.

Some people have used Peel & Seal and other asphalt products without suffering catastrophe, but asphalt will never be as effective as either butyl or a high quality liquid - it has no viscoelasticity. Many people have had terrible problems with asphalt and it isn't just falling off - if it melts, it doesn't matter where it is, it will cause damage. Just as some people can smoke a pack a day for 60 years without dying of a tobaco related desease, some people will get away with putting asphalt in a car. It doesn't mean that it is a smart thing to do. Asphalt is toxic, much less effective and has a significant failure rate.
