fliping subs????

i know an installer who used to do that every now and then back in the day, he said he had this dude bring his car back once and was like "yo man you installed my beat backwards". a little funnier in person.

 
in some cases yes. one reason is to make things equal. the woofer isn't perfectly symmetric. it will not always have the same response moving inward as it would moving outward. one plan is to invert one woofer. that way one woofer moves inward while the other moves outwards (but is backwards). this means the system has a more symetric response -- it moves outward or inward equally well.

this removed some even-order distortion, but does not affect the odd-order distortion.
