Your problems is over population, if cichlids are at the top of the tnak thats a big indication of death coming. You should have airation in any cichlid tank already. Try cutting back your population (turn a fish or two into the pet store for credit) and increasing the filtration. Test your water as well... sounds like you may have a few things going wrong.
ahh ok thanks. I will take one or two back when i go pick up the airpump later today.

i've also noticed that two cichlids that i picked up were acting kinda weird, like they would turn sideways and scratch their sides on the gravel or rocks constantly. Now it seems like a few more are starting to do it as well. I am wondering if this is how they mark territory or something worse like if the two i picked up had some parasite on them and now they are giving it to the rest of the tank?

Its a parasatic issue and a good indication that something is wrong. Do u notice any white dots on fishes? Did u let the bag float in your tank for 30minutes, so the temperature is not drastic to the fishes? Check ur water parameters, specifically nitrite-nitrate-ammonia.

It could be the following:

1)

It is most likely ick/ich, and you see this behavior before the white spots show up. I would treat the tank now for it, and maybe you can clear it up fast. The itching starts, then a day to days later the spots will come. After they start showing the spots, its harder to clear the problem up. The spots stay for a while, then fall off into the tank and infest the water. Then it takes several treatments to clear it up. It can be parasites under the scales or in the gills, and won't hurt to treat with a multi product that takes care of several things in one treatment.

2)

It is a sign that their gills are irritated. This is usually from climbing levels of ammonia, so complete a daily water change for a week and watch your fish closely. If they stop, then that is what it was. If it continues, then I would treat for fungus, using heat and salt. Good Luck!

I use heat and salt to cure the "ick" that happens in fish tanks.

use aquarium salt - avalable at fish store.

get a big coffee mug - fill 3/4 way with water. add a fiew tablespoons of salt to it.

microwave a little - stirr. allow salt to disolve in to the water.

then pour in to ur tank.

to treat the ick - I personaly go 3 tablespoons of salt per 5 gallons of water.

along with turning up the heat slowly till 92 degrees is achieved.

then leave that temp there for 10 days.

after 10 days, do a fiew water changes to dilute the salt content. and slowly lower the temp.

here is a amazing read on fish tank ick.
