What's with the Type-R hype?

Okay, from what I have been reading in this thread and others is that 1 12" Type R will be sufficent for me. I plan on building my own box for it, but what should I power it with? First I was thinking the Orion 1200D, what about the JL 1800D? or do you have other suggestions? I'mkind of confused on how much power to run to the Sub since everyone says it can handle more.
