firewall question

Actually I have a couple of questions...

1. How do I drill a hole in the firewall and then seal it? (location and such)

2. Are there any distances from certain points in the vehicle in which I should ground it? (ie. at least 12" from amp.. or something?)

3. The deck only as 2 rca preouts.. (used by door speakers, obviously) how do i connect the rca to the deck?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can take a second to answer these

For your hole in the firewall... Get your self whats called a grommet. Then you drill an oversized hole for the wire and the grommet has a groove in the middle of it for the sheet metal and you just have to pop it in place and shove your wire through. They serve two purposes they seal around the wire and they also keep it from rubbing on the metal.

You should keep your ground as short as possible.

I'm not sure about your last question....I don't really understand what your saying

A few other things.....put some silicone around the edges of the hole you drilled, and around the outside of the grommet; and once you have it in place, put some silicone on your fingers and cover the grommet/metal with it to prevent the grommet from falling off. Once you slide the wire through and have the length correct, you can put some more silicone in between the wire and the grommet for safety and to make sure no water or anything leaks into your car....only do this if you don't plan to make any adjustments to the wire, since it's not necessary.

As far as the actual drilling process....just drill a hole. It's pretty simple. The only thing you have to be aware of is that you drill through just the firewall, and that you don't drill into anything like the master cylinder or something. If you can, it's simpler to drill from the hood into the cabin, but in most cases it's much easier to drill from the cabin into the hood. To make sure you are drilling through just the firewall, this is what you do.....get a yardstick. Put it down through the hood (near the firewall) so it touches the ground, and find a bare spot on your firewall that is relatively near where you plan to drill. Measure the distance the spot is from the ground and from the edge of the car. Get inside the cabin, and line up those measurements on your firewall and see where it is. Make any necessary adjustments you need to get the exact spot you want to drill through. Measure everything again and double/triple to check to be absolutely certain you are drilling through just the firewall, and have at it.

As far as question 3.....do you mean that your decks RCA preouts are already in use by an amp for your door speakers, and you want to know how to hook up another amp?

Yea... thats the idea, sorry for lack of clarity.

Thanks, very helpful. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Get a pair of 1 Female/2 Male Y RCA adapters. It will split the 2 channels into 4 channels. Like these http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/PHOARX669

Another trick for drilling into the firewall that I do is after you find a location to drill through but there is still some components around the drilling area and you arent to sure you wont hit anything, start with a rather small bit and go slow. when you get through, take a piece of wire and stick it throught the hole and take a light and set it inside the car as close to the hole as possible and look under the hood to see if you can see the light and if so and there is enough room to run the wire, then drill the apropiate hole size. Good luck.
