FIRE in the Blazer! remote turn on wire

Im in the process of moving into a new home and have been hauling a bunch of shit in the back of my blazer. During this process I fold my seats down to gain extra cargo area.

Well anyways Im driving down the freeway and my truck begins to fill with thick smoke! I immediatly pull over and shut the vehicle off. Being that its a S-10 Blazer it only takes about 5 secs to pop off the dash and after quickly looking it over I was unable to see where the smoke was coming from. I then begin to pull out my Pioneer Head Unit with the removal keys.

I get the deck pulled out and right off the bat I notice that the insulation of the remote wire is completly melted. I traced it all the way back and the insulations was melted and crispy for the entire 16 ft run. It turns out the the way I folded the seats down cause the wire to get pinched.

Thankfully nothing else along the wires path was damaged except for some RCA cables.

Should you fuse the remote turn on wire? Ive never heard of anyone doing it before. After what happened today I want to fuse mine for the future.

What size fuse would you use on a remote wire?

i believe a 10A fuse would be sufficient

i had a similar issue in a 2 door blazer also. i kept popping fuses couldnt figure it out, then i saw that the previous installer ran the 4 gauge threw the seat hinge and it would pinch the wire and ground it out. took me 3 times of having the kid come back to get it working. did yours pinch on that hinge.

5 seconds to get the dash off? What kind of magical blazer do you have?? lol. that sucks, thats something to think about though
LOL, ya it comes off fast, just pops off. I leave the bottom 4 or so bolts out and just tuck it in the bottom plate. Kinda hard to explain, but it works out well.

Im gonna replace teh cable with some 16ga. cable and fuse it with 10amps.

haha alright yea i see it wasent fun my first time doing it. off topic but i ordered the nite shade spray by the way lol, my friend did it on his black 2door blazer it turned out so sick. i cant wait.

bcae1.com recommends a 1/2A for the remote wire.

Most amps don't take more than a few mA to power up, and the 1/2A fuse - SHOULD protect your remote turn on circuit as they are usually good for a few hundred mA.

Which begs the question - how did you not fry your HU turn on circuit?
