For the pople who have bought Fi Q, any try it in a sealed alignment yet? I know some have put it in ported's but how does it sound. My main goal is SQwith little bit of SQL. Looking to feed it 600-800w rms daily at 2 ohm but might drop it to .5 ohms (1600wrms +) once in a while for a show maybe. Am I doing the right thing by going selaed or should I opt for the ported? Depending on which alignment (gotta make sure with Scott also), for the people who are good with plotting drivers on sfotware and designing boxes, can you please help me out with a design? Any help will be appreciated. Thank yous.

My sealed 18 Q's are doing a good job for now. I personally don't like the response of a sealed box, but it doesn't sound shitty if that's what you're asking. I hope they don't lose their tightness when I transfer them to the wall.

SQwith little bit of SQL.no such thing..either SQ with a little spl...SQ+SPL=SQL
Thanks for correcting me. Looking for primarily SQ, but also want the setup to go a little loud if possible.

you going sealed out of choice, or because you dont have the room to go ported
I have as much room as possible (to a certain point lol). It's a 02 Maxima, which has quite bit of room.

I want some tightness and accuracy of a good strictly SQ sub with a little loudness (again if possible) but don't want it to sound boomy and not have any characteristics of a shi**y SPL sub if I go ported. It's a quality driver and don't want to waste the oppurtunity.

If your running 1600watts i would go sealed but if you have the room and are running 600-800 watts i would go ported also, what kind of music do you listen too.

I havent tried mine sealed yet but that's where it's going to end up after everything is in place....but I will say this sub sounds darn good ported...I listen to alot of live rock and IMO does very well....I think the sub will get loud even sealed.....oh and Scott told me once that they will play lower than most subs in a small sealed enclosure, if that helps at all.

i say make 2boxes at the same time and see wut is best, sealed will generally have better transient response.. but ported could sound better or same as sealed , louder of course ...

i went with 3type of boxes in my maxima , spl box, sealed, and sql box(more sq)...

spl box: was veryloud but lacked low end, had good transient response, and u could feel that slam on ur back with air flowing all over in the car by the sub:D, pretty nice feeling!!

sealed: transient response was REALLY good. was fast and sounded good, blend well with the frontstage. but wasnt very loud, but was very acceptable

sq box: wut I have now. well it sounds good but transient response (on some frequency)is weaker than both boxes above , but is loud and goes low nicely so it kinda doesnt miss a beat, it also blend well with the frontstage, its more lively and sounds more laid back than punchy... u know wut I mean?

hope that helped....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I can compromise little loudness if that makes a difference. I'm more intersted in accuracy, detail, and it must more than just keep up with the music notes.

IS it possible to tune a ported for SQ and come close to the sealed response?
The best you can do is design the box to have a nearly flat response on the graph. That usually means a low tuning freq, regardless in the car/trunk/whatever its in, your going to have in cabin gain.

The lower it gets, the louder it will get.

Im going to guess 4cu ft tuned to about 28hz or so should be pretty close to this.

Personally after trying a sealed setup (no Im not running a FI) it is more tight, but I just dont think its my cup of tea so to speak.

If its a recommended size on the FI site (which it is) I really dont see you having any problems with it, especially if your only planning on feeding it 600-800 rms.

I ran a demo on WinISD (using the Dual 2 specs) just to get a look at it and even with over 1500rms I still dont see the sub exceeding its mechanical limits, even at 20hz.

So with 600-800 I highly doubt any issues, even with a box that size.

Only issue I see is somehow getting that size of a box in your trunk. I barley shoehorned a large box in my max before my current setup, and it wasnt near 4.0ft with a decent amount of port area. Might need to get that box build inside the trunk. Lets see the outside specs were...

W: 40"

D : 14"

H : 16"

That I believe is the largest rectangle shaped box your going to be able to fit in your trunk. You cant really go any wider. You have some room in height and depth once inside, but I cant see a box any larger getting through the trunks opening. Unless you somehow build an external port or something along those lines.

Good luck laying down sound deadener in that car, I just finished mine up and its a royal pain in the rear. Gotta love the rattle box max's lol

LOL. I just started doing my max today, starting with the trunk. Finished it up mostly (exculind the rear deck and lid). My back hurts like a bit*h.

The box is gonna be a PITA to get in but i guess I'll have to tilt it to the depth side and then slide it in somehow. So 4cuft with what tuning? 32 or 28 or something else?
