This is the smartest man in the thread, no offense to the OP, it is a winderful write up, and im half black, and didnt know some of the things that you posted.I feel I may need to dive deeper into the quote in your sig. In my experiences, it seems as if many youth of both races tend to only see what's visible. When I graduated high school, there were a couple students who went to Ivy League schools and many more who went to work for Nissan. For those who don't know, Nissan and its support contractors basically make the area I am from.
Who would you figure got the most praise from teachers, principals, peers, etc? The answer is those who go the jobs at Nissan. I don't think many of our youth (which I am a member of) have the ability to see what's not visible to them. Seeing local drug dealers rise out of the slums is visible. Many people know someone who has done this. Therefore, drug dealing your way out of the projects becomes possible. Because that method to success is visible, it is also achievable. Many people I know do not know anyone who has become a lawyer. The reason is that those who do succeed in academia or business get the hell out and don't want any part of that life anymore. I am a somewhat successful financial analyst and options trader. I could go back to high school and explain to young students about what I do an options they have when the pursue careers.
The reason I do not is because such occupations are not respected by many young teens. I could tell them I spend about 5 hours a day researching stocks and still sometimes I lose money. I could tell them I work two jobs to raise the money to gain enough capital to successfully run an options fund. However, that isn’t cool or fun. There are no women that throw themselves at me because I trade options. Great traders do not have 20” rims or hundred thousand dollar jewelry; they have estates and bank accounts. However, these things are not visible to the youth. When I see people at the liquor store with a pocket full of cash, I don’t think “Well, there is a baller” I think there is some idiot who could put that money in MMA getting 2 or 3% versus sitting in his pocket getting nothing. It is very difficult to get people to see that.
This isn’t a white or black thing, it is an ignorance thing. Motivated by materialism rather than self-actualization, the only goals worth seeking are those you can see and show off to others. I do not know the best solution to get people to see past temporary “riches”, and get them to focus on creating wealth. It is as if no one has ever heard of Mc Hammer, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and many other successful entertainers and athletes who go boom to bust, not because they incorrectly predicted fluctuations in natural gas prices, but because they were focused only on the visible. It must be terrible to live a life style where you whole day is focused on showing off to others.
What?!??? You never disclosed this to me.This is the smartest man in the thread, no offense to the OP, it is a winderful write up, and im half black, and didnt know some of the things that you posted.
naive supporter of failed planning and strategy; defender of incompetence.
Because they are scandalous //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif.thanks toasted, that sounds like a great idea, but i mainly wrote this for ppl on here who often have questions about why some black people do the things we do, but were afraid to ask. this is also to inform ppl on here who do some of these things also or have seen black people do it and have no idea where it comes from/ the origins.
u just stated in a nutshell why there's need for a black history month.its nothing new.. look at blacksploitation in the 70s, the glorification of pimps/macks/drugs and an overall degenerate lifestyle... 'thug life' is just the continuation of that culture...
Its sad that society associates such base themes with black culture overall; that positive aspects of black culture are so easily eclipsed by negative ones in the eyes of the majority.
i have to disagree. if u look at older pics of black people from the 1930's up to the 1970's, u'll see no sagging at all with clothing. an excellent place to start is with charles 'teenie' harris. he worked for the pittsburgh courier back in its heyday and took some terrific photos of everyday life in black communities. and throughout the 50's - 70's, the style of pants were dungarees or some type of chinos. thse pants have/had a regular of slim fit to them. i never seen any bruh from the 60's or seventies wear a sag with bellbottoms. even in the 1980's tight or regular fitting jeans were in among black males. go to yahoo and put charles teenie harris in the image search.i would have to disagree with the pants sagging section.
Pants sagging originally originated from poverty where parents had to buy pants 2X bigger so they would last longer, because the parents were to poor to buy new ones for growing boys.
Listen to Killer mikes song called " thats life", very positive song where he speaks on views of things, and thats why i like killer mike cause he doesnt bite his toungue like most of these rappers and he speaks on real life situations on which he went through
we all have those stereotypes, even me. if i see a young black dude drivin a nice car in a poor neighborhood, i assume he's hustlin. if i see a young white dude drivin a nice car in a poor neighborhood, i assume he's lost and thats his dads car. i even assume helives in the suburbs in a 2 parent home!!! it comes from media images and ppl who really do stupid destructive things and brag about it constantly. over and over, these things become ingrained in our subconscious and conscious. The question is why?
Why do people glorify such poor choices? Why does BET glorify such choices. If mainstream black media does not help reverse these negative stereotypes (and I stereotype. If I see a guy with a pocket full of cash I assume both he is a drug dealer and that he is stupid) How come even though "white media" focuses on the negative aspects of our culture, white are still regarded as successful?
no, but i can't write about black ppl without includin myselfBecause they are scandalous //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif.
