Good write up man. I read all of it too. I didn't know some of that stuff and other parts of it opened up my eyes.
I feel I may need to dive deeper into the quote in your sig. In my experiences, it seems as if many youth of both races tend to only see what's visible. When I graduated high school, there were a couple students who went to Ivy League schools and many more who went to work for Nissan. For those who don't know, Nissan and its support contractors basically make the area I am from.
Who would you figure got the most praise from teachers, principals, peers, etc? The answer is those who go the jobs at Nissan. I don't think many of our youth (which I am a member of) have the ability to see what's not visible to them. Seeing local drug dealers rise out of the slums is visible. Many people know someone who has done this. Therefore, drug dealing your way out of the projects becomes possible. Because that method to success is visible, it is also achievable. Many people I know do not know anyone who has become a lawyer. The reason is that those who do succeed in academia or business get the hell out and don't want any part of that life anymore. I am a somewhat successful financial analyst and options trader. I could go back to high school and explain to young students about what I do an options they have when the pursue careers.
The reason I do not is because such occupations are not respected by many young teens. I could tell them I spend about 5 hours a day researching stocks and still sometimes I lose money. I could tell them I work two jobs to raise the money to gain enough capital to successfully run an options fund. However, that isn’t cool or fun. There are no women that throw themselves at me because I trade options. Great traders do not have 20” rims or hundred thousand dollar jewelry; they have estates and bank accounts. However, these things are not visible to the youth. When I see people at the liquor store with a pocket full of cash, I don’t think “Well, there is a baller” I think there is some idiot who could put that money in MMA getting 2 or 3% versus sitting in his pocket getting nothing. It is very difficult to get people to see that.
This isn’t a white or black thing, it is an ignorance thing. Motivated by materialism rather than self-actualization, the only goals worth seeking are those you can see and show off to others. I do not know the best solution to get people to see past temporary “riches”, and get them to focus on creating wealth. It is as if no one has ever heard of Mc Hammer, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and many other successful entertainers and athletes who go boom to bust, not because they incorrectly predicted fluctuations in natural gas prices, but because they were focused only on the visible. It must be terrible to live a life style where you whole day is focused on showing off to others.
I'm not really bothered by peoples hair habits.this is true. like i said, hair care needs to betakin care of in the home, barbershop or beauty salon
I completely agree with all of this. it's whats on tv and so much of the youth watches tv. that has also made my job hard because of the occupation i'm in. I'm a chef (not a cook who works in a kitchen, i manage operations of a kitchen.)I feel I may need to dive deeper into the quote in your sig. wow, but i do understandI'm not really bothered by peoples hair habits.
people can do what the fuk they want, as long as they don't get no activator on me or my shit.
I do have a little black history month story for you adio.
At the beginning of the month i got this email in my campus email, saying "did you know xxxxx invented xxxx in 1896?" I don't remember who it was, or what they invented, but i replied to it with "no, and i don't really give a fuk either".
I was confused and didn't relate it to black history month, until later when further messages they sent said what it was for, and that it was being sent from the black student union. By that time i had forgotten i even responded to the first one.
So yesterday, in research methods class, we were doing this sampling thing with a lists of students. My name was on the list. This kid i know from class.. talk to him often.. he asks me, "You're Josh XXXX?!", and i said yeah.. he told me was the one sending out the emails and he got my message and thought i was a racist. I pissed off the black students union //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
I just randomly respond to the spam the school sends out with smart *** responses because their constant barrage of worthless emails is annoying and obscures important email.
I inadvertently insulted the black student union on the first day of black history month. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
exactly!!! when these ideas on how to live aren't shown to people, especially a people who disempowered and disenfranchised, in essence, it saying cause it's bullshiit, to live like this. according to popular black culture and soon to be, pop culture in genral......good= jewlrey, rims, money wads bad= regular job, owning a home, saving retirement moneyI completely agree with all of this. it's whats on tv and so much of the youth watches tv. that has also made my job hard because of the occupation i'm in. I'm a chef (not a cook who works in a kitchen, i manage operations of a kitchen.)These kids see whats on the food network and think that working in a kitchen is "cool". What they don't realize is that it's hard disciplined work. Alot of people get the hell out of the kitchen after awhile cause they can't take the stress. I feel the media over states what it takes to be cool. huge 20" rims, jewelry, huge as houses for 2 people. I'd much rather have my cozy home, my family and my two newer cars (stratus' actually) and have money to retire.
If you want, you can read a book called Freakonomics. It discussed how a University of Chicago professor stayed on the streets to try to understand the economics of gang life. The aveage corner drug dealer only makes a couple bucks an hour, which is why most drug dealers live at home with mom.exactly!!! when these ideas on how to live aren't shown to people, especially a people who disempowered and disenfranchised, in essence, it saying cause it's bullshiit, to live like this. according to popular black culture and soon to be, pop culture in genral......good= jewlrey, rims, money wads bad= regular job, owning a home, saving retirement moneyits very unfortunate, that many young people, especially young black males, choose lifestlyes where they know there are very high chances of getting shot to death, thrown in state corrections for long periods of time, or other things, but they do it anyway.
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/word.gif.64b12e39f936af3b4fff38a1c0bd0244.gif I hate how the 'black' black people call successful black people 'white' and against their heritage. Do you see people in Africa wearing bling, packin nines, putting rims on their Hummers or smoking pot? Ghetto people are hadly aware of their heritage, either. That is a problem that I think black people face. If you are a successful black person you are called white and going against your heritage.
If you hang out on the corner from dawn til dusk you are just being black and that is okay.
It must be tough to be black with that kind of social issue.
No, I see 9 year olds toting assault rifles through Sierra Leone.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/word.gif.64b12e39f936af3b4fff38a1c0bd0244.gif I hate how the 'black' black people call successful black people 'white' and against their heritage.
