#7 why it's important to have a black history month
well, i know alot y'all ask why can't there be a white history month. well, 1st because no-one has seriously tried to start it yet, BUT on the flipside, historically, (this is 2nd) if white people tried to do some for, by and about white people to present to the world, it would be considered a white supremacy move. in this sense, i'm not specificaly referring or implying images of neo-nazis or KKK members. i'm referring to a mentality of 'WE are white and these are the postive things we have done for the world' that historically, this line has a side effect of suppression and oppression. another think to think about is that white history month is given to us almost everyday. how so?? whenever you log onto YAHOO or EXCITE, they have news stories about people doing incredible things. these people are white and they have performed some incredible fuki feats that benefit people in ways that well be felt for years. for instance nobel prize winners. Andrew Z. Fire and Craig C. Mello (2 white guys) for their discovery of RNA interference - gene silencing by double-stranded RNA; John C. Mather and George F. Smoot (2 white guys) for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation; Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men to walk on the Moon;
Inventors of the internet------
J.C.R. Licklider of MIT the first head of the computer research program at DARPA, starting in October 1962.......Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on packet switching theory in July 1961 and the first book on the subject in 1964.Kleinrock convinced (lawrence)Roberts of the theoretical feasibility of communications using packets rather than circuits, which was a major step along the path towards computer networking. To make the computers talk together, in 1965 working with Thomas Merrill, Roberts connected the TX-2 computer in Mass. to the Q-32 in California with a low speed dial-up telephone line creating the first (however small) wide-area computer network ever built.
and then there are whilte women who made history: in1916 Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic; 1932 Hattie W. Carraway- First woman elected to the US Senate. In august of 2004, Professor Susan Hockfield became the first woman president of MIT; Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco was elected Speaker of The U.S. House of Representatives, for the first time in its 218-year history . ok go on and on, but u get the point. these people did some extraordinary fukin things. they are trailblazers and need to be seen as such. the thing about it is, this types of trailblazers , who happen to be white, are made everyday, except their stories don't make it to press, but what they do benefits all people not just the ones they know or just other white people, but people from any walk of life.
the reason for black history month started out as negro history week. it was started by dr. carter g. woodson in 1926, chosen in the second week of February between the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, which evolved into Black History Month in 1976. according to dr. woodson, Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history. If a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.
Imagine for a second that all black history is controlled and dessiminated by popular media outlets only. in other words, the only history that we would have is what media puts on tv and radio. that means that our history would be relegated to rappers, athletes, drug dealers, true and wanna-be thugs, ghetto welfare chicks, eyc. everything negative. to rise up would be impossible, because there would be no cultural anchor nor would there a positive comparison to see yourself in a different position in life. there will always be a 50 cent, lil wayne, too short, jadakiss, NWA, jim jones, snoop, lil kim. but there must always be a condileeza rice, colin powell, randal thompson, cornel west, bill cosby, chris garder, dr. c. mae jemison, coretta scott king, huey newton, gabriel prosser, harriet tubman, berry gordon, Farrah Gray, marion jones, molefi asante, eric jerome dickey, johnnie cochran, sidney poitier, henry louis gates, dr. martin luther king jr., booker t washington, dr. charles drew, Neil deGrasse Tyson, medgar evers, malcolm x, muhammad ali, maulana karenga, Beth A. Brown and many others. there needs to be a balance, especially with the images being put out today. IT'S VERY VERY VERY VERY 1 sided. think about most of the black movies that come to theaters.......... they're mostly comedies, right?? i wish i could ask black scriptwriters, black directors, black producers, why not make epics (like 'troy' or 'gladiator'), romances (like 'City of Angels' or 'Notting Hill') ***** the last decent black romance movie that came out was 'love jones' ****** , dramas (like 'the godfather' flicks or 'blood diamond')?!!??!!?!?!!? 90% of movies that have a majority african american cast are comedies and to add to that, only 4 -7 black movies come out a year that make it to major theaters. movies with black actors or actresses that have a lead role and the movies are non-comedies are needed. the same for songs. *****es, ho's, *****s, coke, crack, heat in the waist, chains, grills, rims, houses, trips need to balanced with love, peace, spirituality, community involvement and upliftment, mental resurrection, cooperative economics, respect for women ( because u do have a mother, sister and maybe a daughter), etc.
As a i said before, being black shouldn't depend on being ghetto or loud and obnoxious. there really is no "way" of being "black". like i said in a post a few months back, being a race or nationality depends strictly on stereotypes. black history month is needed now more than ever, simply to combat the negatives images we see today, everyday on tv and heard through the radio.
