Early in this thread, Jacob from Sundown related his own sad experience with asphalt products. Wat he didn't say was that his installation technique was bordering on the compulsive. If anybody deserved t be rewarded for their diligence, he did.

True story... I am really obsessive about dampening material. I have a problem //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I used to use Peel & Seal because "I never had a problem" even for 2-3 years - a few years down the line after that the product began melting and oozing out onto the carpet and interior panels. I've seen the same result with original "Dynamat" applications as well. It can really ruin a vehicles interior.

I no longer advise using anything but Second Skin or Raamat (for lower budget application) -- in my personal vehicles I don't even bother dampening until I save up for Second Skin. Not worth it... I only want to dampen a car ONCE and never worry about it again, no matter how many years I have the car.

Why gamble with questionable products when there are products that are proven to be superior and have been for YEARS. I remember when Ant started Second Skin... I've never heard of it failing in any application, ever. I even stuck a piece of Damplifier to the transmission case in my old Honda Civic to slow down a leak... and I had a hard time peeling it off a year later when I finally got around to fixing it.

The irony in all of this is that all of the questions addressed in this thread are completely quantifiable. This isn't like a creationism vs. evolution debate in which there are enough unknowns to allow the anti-science crowd to park their trucks in the gaps and pretend what we don't know is more important than what we do.

There are well defined standards for measuring vibration damping and sound blocking. You and I have been complaining about the lack of data being provided by manufacturers. Since we don't have everything we need, we've had to extrapolate from what we do have and sometimes approach the question through secondary characteristics.

Does anybody really believe that these two Luddites would change their positions if we had complete testing results for every product out there? I'm certain they would not. In BB's case, he is trapped in the simple observations leading to incorrect conclusions trap with some perverse contrariness thrown in for fun . NA is just trying to build ICIX cred by spreading the gospel. BB seems offended that I have suggested he might be getting paid for his efforts here - apparently missing the reality that this the most charitable interpretation possible.

One last point on this. Everyone is looking for the least expensive way to get the job done. This isn't a subjective debate over the merits of using $5000 speakers vs. $100 speakers in a moving car. When it comes to controlling resonance in sheet metal panels, constrained layer damping is an effective and widely accepted and tested approach. It requires a material that is engineered for the job, not something that looks like a product engineered for the job that costs as little per square foot as possible. That metric only has meaning when you are dealing with products that meet a minimal performance standard. Asphalt doesn't even come close. Only some butyl compounds do. The perfect butyl compound won't work unless it is mated to a decently thick and rigid constraining layer.

I took off the panel of my trunk lid and the Fatmat I had on it was falling off.

There were some pieces that stuck on but 70% were coming off.

I had to take it off and put my eDead vse3 on.
