Fairly splitting the rent.

This will be the second year I'm living in this house and I'm a bit fed up on how we split the rent. The house we live in is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom and one laundry room/dishwasher/refrigerator room. I am sharing a room with a good mate of mine and there are two more guys with their own rooms.

I'm made this thread to get input on what is the fair way to split rent. I've checked online. Here are the two solutions.

1) Get the whole square footage of the house and then divide by the total cost of the rent to determine the value of each square foot. Then multiply the square footage of each room by the cost of each square foot.

(Total Sq ft. of house/total rent = price per sq ft.) ---> (price per sq ft. x sq ft. of each room) = rent per person

2) The other way is just to count the square footage of the rooms.

( Total rent/ Total Room sq ft = Value of each sq ft.) ---> (value of each sq ft. x sq ft. of each room) = rent per person

*NOTE* The people who split the room should get the total rent of their room and split in half. (We have been willing to compromise a little bit on that)

I deem the second one to be fair because common space is every one's space and that rent should be determined by our actual personal living space.

As it is right now:

My room mate and I unwillingly agreed for one year (which can be debated after the first year) to pay a higher rent as to keep the peace. Mike, is a big commotion kind of guy and cheap stake for rent. He was almost broke down when we told him what we thought was the fair way to split rent.

Total Rent = $2000

My buddy and I, sharing the room pays = $477.5 each person

Mike, who lives in the largest single room pays = $555

Andrew, who lives in the smallest single room pays = $490

Mine and my room mate's room = 162.1 sq ft.

(M) Largest single room = 128.3 sq ft.

(A) Smallest single room = 85.5 sq ft.

After using method (2) we concluded that this is what we should be paying:

Mine and my room mate's room = $440 each person

(M) Largest single room = $660

(A) Smallest single room = $460

yeah thats ****ing expensive

Im in the same situation, with the whole 3 bedrooms and four roommates thing (the third bedroom is the third floor though)

We have a f*cking brand new, 3 story condo with a 2 car garage, and our rent is $1575 a month TOTAL.

We agreed on rent like so. I have the master bedroom, i pay $455 a month. The guy that has the other single room pays $415 a month. Then the two guys sharing the room split the leftover cost.

Thanks for the input guys. Actually, I live in San Luis Obispo, CA (I need to update my location) where the housing is out of control. My house is roughly a little less than 750 sq ft in total.

I will agree that we aren't that far off, but almost 40 bucks a month does count for about a tank of gas, which does indeed make a huge difference when you are going to college. Yeah, $440 is already enough because our rent is this + utilities which is another ridiculous cost.

The hard part isn't calculating this but getting this logical argument into the head of my other room mate.

Method 2 is the most fair and it still does not account for the privacy factor.

I'd try to add a $50 per month privacy surcharge to the other guys rent //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Then again, I'd be one of the other guys in this particular situation.

I honestly think that we are going to have to use the privacy argument just to get it down to a fair price.

rent = rooms occupied and ammenities(bathroom outer door, etc.)bills = people in the house
explain.

i dont know id be pissed if i was the guy whos rent went up 100 bucks.
Well, thats the problem. He is already stingy about the rent when it's his parents who pay for it. The roomy with the smaller room doesn't mind paying $500 dollars for his rent since his parents pay for it too!
