This will be the second year I'm living in this house and I'm a bit fed up on how we split the rent. The house we live in is a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom and one laundry room/dishwasher/refrigerator room. I am sharing a room with a good mate of mine and there are two more guys with their own rooms.
I'm made this thread to get input on what is the fair way to split rent. I've checked online. Here are the two solutions.
1) Get the whole square footage of the house and then divide by the total cost of the rent to determine the value of each square foot. Then multiply the square footage of each room by the cost of each square foot.
(Total Sq ft. of house/total rent = price per sq ft.) ---> (price per sq ft. x sq ft. of each room) = rent per person
2) The other way is just to count the square footage of the rooms.
( Total rent/ Total Room sq ft = Value of each sq ft.) ---> (value of each sq ft. x sq ft. of each room) = rent per person
*NOTE* The people who split the room should get the total rent of their room and split in half. (We have been willing to compromise a little bit on that)
I deem the second one to be fair because common space is every one's space and that rent should be determined by our actual personal living space.
As it is right now:
My room mate and I unwillingly agreed for one year (which can be debated after the first year) to pay a higher rent as to keep the peace. Mike, is a big commotion kind of guy and cheap stake for rent. He was almost broke down when we told him what we thought was the fair way to split rent.
Total Rent = $2000
My buddy and I, sharing the room pays = $477.5 each person
Mike, who lives in the largest single room pays = $555
Andrew, who lives in the smallest single room pays = $490
Mine and my room mate's room = 162.1 sq ft.
(M) Largest single room = 128.3 sq ft.
(A) Smallest single room = 85.5 sq ft.
After using method (2) we concluded that this is what we should be paying:
Mine and my room mate's room = $440 each person
(M) Largest single room = $660
(A) Smallest single room = $460
