Extra Alt.

I was wondering what I would need for running a 2nd alternator. Now before I get 50 post telling me I am an idiot it will cost more than buying a HO alt, I will say this. I have a sr20de engine. It comes in rwd and fwd nissan cars. The fwd has the alt on the left of the crank and the rwd has the alt on the right side of the crank. I can take the rwd alt and brackets(which I already have) and mount the 2nd alt on my fwd no modifications except a belt. I would need something to regulate the voltage any opinions on what to get? If the one alt is running just the stereo and is pushing 3000 watts I would think the stock 110A isnt enough? So my next question is how many amps does 3000 watts pull from the alt. I can have it wound to be 160A or so. I can do this for less than $200 on my car v/s the price of a 220A $450 is the cheapest I could find. That was quoted on the group buy.

Here is what I say.......

 

Add the extra alt as you want. If it is that simple, go for it.

 

He is what I am doing.

I am fabbing a bracket to hold an extra factory alt. Factory alt cost $100 with a lifetime warranty. My stock one will run the truck and the stereo. The second alt will run to a battery in the rear and have an Oasis compressor hooked up for all my airride needs. If the alt burns up, (either one), I just go get another one with the receipt. Can't do that with a HO one now can you?

That doesnt seem right. If I have a voltage regulator then I should be able to up the voltage to at least 14v.

.... My calculation is based upon how many amps you need to power your system fully.

even if you push the voltage to 14.4v (which I doubt the regulator in the stock alt will do) you still have 3000w / 14.4v = 208.33a.

Spend the extra money and get an alternator ment for High Output applications, NOT one that has been jurry rigged/re-wound to get you there.

I'll be running 2 GM largecase alts on my car instead of one stock small case.

360 amps of alternators FTW! The Idea of dual alts REALLY appeals to me.
