External port tubes?

When I was originally in to car audio, ported boxes all had the tubes inside the box. I've been getting back into the hobby and have noticed a lot of boxes now have the port tubes extend outside the box. Is there a performance gain by doing this, or just a personal preference?

All the ones ive seen like you describe look that way cause the box is way too small to fit all the port length. Aside from that, i dont know if there is a benefit per se.

That makes sense. I've always preferred sealed boxes in the past, so never dived into ported construction. In the past, ported boxes always seemed require more volume than sealed, making it a non-issue to fit the tube.
