I have an extra 200 gig external hard drive lying around the house, and i want to find a use for it.

i was wondering if i buy a head unit with a usb port, i can save an almost unlimited amount of songs on this maxtor beast, and play them in my car through the usb port.

would it work? and would the quality of the music be alright?

also, what head unit with usb would you recomend?

explain... carputer?

edit:

heres my motive.

i have a 2g ipod.... which i can keep enough songs on to entertain me on my walks to class and stuff. but i'm looking for something to hold all of my songs to play in my jeep... and i need a new head unit anyhow....

what would you guys do?

What size is the limit for the Kenwood's to read? If 200 gig is too much, what is good? 40 or 80 gig? I'm planning on the 80gig 7200 RPM external build, but I need to make sure the unit can handle it before purchasing.

word, you wont even need the external hdd if you put one in your car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

i know the x-590 will read my moms 80 gb wd passport.
This is great news, because this is the unit I am looking into. You are positive it reads and plays the music off of an 80 gigabyte hard drive? Do you know the specs on that hard drive? What MB is the cache, what does the drive spin at (i.e., 7200 RPM), and what capacity is that USB? 2.0?

Thanks for the help, I'm doing this shortly and need to research everything before I go ahead and do this.

EDIT: if you do not know the specs, throw the manufacturer name, model name, any literature on the unit and I'll figure it out myself. Thanks alot.

I agree; it doesn't. :) See my comment above on Tuesday at 4:08 pm; in short, I'll use the auxiliary port on the FM transmitter.
