I have a 40 gig Travelstar IDE 2.5" laptop hard drive just laying around and want to use it in a hard drive case in my car. The cables that come with the cases have two usb's on one end and one on the other. I was wondering if the 9886 would supply enough power for the hard drive or will I fry it? If anything I guess the hard drive was free and the case is only like $6 shipped so I won't be out much, but I don't want to hurt the head unit:crap:

I don't think you will fry anything...typically if the USB accessory requires a high powered USB port, it simply will not turn on. If it does power up, I am not so sure that your HU will recognize the HD anyways. Worth a try.

yeah, USB's a really good bus. Its not very fickle, and rarely do they just "burn out." Either it works or it doesn't. I would give it a shot. Make sure your headunit has really strong POWER and GROUND connections.
