I have 2 Escort SR7's installed in my cars. IMO they are the best on the market. I have never been caught or been close to being caught by cops. You can get them cheaper than 1G....i got mine for about 500 installed. They also have great range. If you don't want to spend that much, the Escort 8500-x50 is a great choice as well.

Ive always heard valentine 1's are the best, but that the SR7 is good if you want low profile{smaller unit/less visible}.

The Valentine 1 is more hype than actual performance. Both the Escort 8500 (and its upgrade the X50) and the Bel Pro RX65 outperformed it in all areas but X-band detection. As the majority of devices emitting X-band frequencies nowadays are microwaves and automatic door openers and fewer and fewer law enforcement agencies using X-band speed detection devices extraordinary X-band radar detection impresses me none at all.

I've heard great things about the X50 from those who've used 'em. I have the Bel RX65 and would recommend it to anyone.

EDIT: To respond to the original post....my uncle has the SR7 and raves about it. He got it installed here locally for about $700. It continually gets great reviews by numerous publications so I wouldn't imagine it's a bad investment....just outside of my budget.

The only reason why the Valentine 1 is supposivly better, is because of the directional arrows. The Escort X 50 and the RX65 are better at detecting, which is what you bought it for.
