Whats the advantage of buying an equalizer?

What can it do for my system?

How hard is it to use?

And how do i pick out the right one for me?

What should i look for in a good equlizer?

Thx alot for the help!

i know its alot of questions but the help is really apreciated!

if possible, i suggest you demo a crossover by hooking up a computer/laptop to the car audio, then using winamp and various plugins (windows OS) or XMMS/mplayer and maybe aRts or other plugins (Linux), not sure what OSX uses. in anycase, it will show exactly what an eq will do without you needing to spend extra money.

quick notes:

graphic -- more bands, can only set the level of each band. 31 band EQ's exist for high tweakability, 5-10band dash mount EQs exist for easy/limited tone control.

parametric -- less bands. can set the level, frequency, and bandwidth (range of freqeucnies around the center freqeucny). can fix specific issues.

parametric is more versatile unless you get a 31 band EQ for each channel.

Personally I like digital parametrics that have an infinite number of settings you can add. those are pretty expensive though

EQ's are a tool. its kinda like -- what is better a fork or a spoon? the fork can be used to pick up salad, while the spoon is number 1 with soup... which one is better depends upon if you got a soup or a salad...

a graphic EQ is ideal for user-understandable tone shaping -- more of a general tool

a parametric EQ is ideal for dealing with specific issues that might arise.

one of my goals is to set up an adaptive EQ that takes feedback from microphones to dynamically set the EQ. not sure how well this will work though.

As everyone else said; There is no better here. It's just whatever is needed in your setup. Some people prefer, or might need, total control over the entire frequency spectrum. So, those people would pick up a 31 band graphic. Other people will only need or want a smaller band parametric so they can target specific problem areas.
