engineering...

University of South Florida; Sophmore; Automotive applications, what can I say, I'ma motor head; I havnt thought too much about a Senior project yet, just tossed around ideas with a few friends; After school though is the military, ROTC and Special Warfare...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/woot.gif.aaa6090e619a97b6090d16dd863c5a69.gif

im in civil engineering, and i'm just sick of math/physics based stuff. in high school, i always took english/history AP classes, but no math/science AP's. i chose engineering to see if i would like it, and i don't. i prefer less theorhetical based classes, such as history. theres not much theorhetical about something that has already happened.
there's always theory in engineering. but the key is knowing the theory and then applying it. and from the way you saying how you don't like math and physics, get out of civil engineering. there's so much math/physics involved in civil engineering you'll gag. lol. i think a change of major is in order.

I bounced from ME to EE and now back to ME...
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/woot.gif.aaa6090e619a97b6090d16dd863c5a69.gif mechanical engineer here too. im a freshman too, but all my classes are easy, engineering graphics is the only engineering based class //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

ive been around the block a time or two

Mechanical Engineering

Computer Engineering

Computer Science

Business

Mechanical Engineering

it doesnt hurt to switch majors. unless you want to get out of school in a timely manner. follow your d wherever it leads you.

yo yo yo noob is in the house and noob has this shiznit hurr to say my mans!:

on the 27th im going to be seeing a financial aid counselor and theyre going to have me choose a major. im really thinking about doing ENGINEERING.. but i dont know the sub-categories and what they're involved with. but from reading this thread, i've pretty much narrowed it down to three:

mechanical engineering (since im currently a smog technician and have a basic knowledge of engine performance)..

electrical engineer (since i know electrical theory and hear good things about the field.. especially the pay and opportunities)

audio engineer (i love producing music)

Audio engineering is tough to find, there aren't many schools that offer it...

I had delusions of engineering at one point, but I'd rather approach it from the business side first and see where the technical side of things takes me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

im looking at mechanical enginerring, or somehow find an audio engineering based degree. How do u guys like your mech eng classes?
Audio Engineering outside of specialty schools is nearly impossible to find. If you want to understand the physics behind sound and the design of the acoustical components, you are going to have to settle with EE or physics. The last school that had a really great program was Georgia Tech about 5-10 years ago, but the school scrapped the program. The professors are still there though.

Oddly enough, I am going to apply to grad schools for masters in systems engineering which is a hell of a lot more interesting than EE, IMO.

since i know you're some type of mechanical nerd (no offense) since you work with tube amps and all that crazy stuff, i think i find credibility out of you the most in this thread. but that's personal reasons i guess im not saying it like its a fact. but with that in mind, you've got me wondering if is hould just major in business. honestly, it seems like all fingers are pointing in that direction because people around me are always saying business is the way to go. some of their reasons are:

a) business is better because youre not out in the field doing as much hands-on.. instead, you get paid just as well "calling the shots" from the background.

b) you can get into any field in business.. for example, you can apply your knowledge towards owning your own "car-related" business.. or even your own car audio shop business??

c) business will always be booming

are these all facts or r they subjective? can u guys give me input on this.. i was about to decide on engineering but now i'm stuck between the two!! one pro engineering has over business is that i think i would find learning about scientific properties appealing.. so id be more interested to pay attention in class. business seems like we'd be studying a bunch of principles straight out of a text book which i think would make me space out and day dream... can someone sum up how business classes are? will they appeal to me? grRRr its hard deciding this big decision!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif

I assume you mean music when you say audio engineer, however...

I'm kind of specializing in "audio engineering" but its more like acoustics and noise control. Right now for my year long senior design project I'm working with Caterpillar to reduce the noise output of the HVAC systems in their machines. Michigan Tech is one of the three main sources of noise and vibrations expertise along with Virginia Tech and cant remember waht the third one is but anywho, its pretty interesting.

It would have been nice if there was at least one class a semeseter in the previous years which put the things you learn as an M.E. to use, because boy its some dry stuff. But now that I'm actually putting that crap to use, its rather interesting.

I want to work for my schools formula SAE team

trying to get an internship with northrop grumman

haha
I'm on the Formula Team. Brakes and Suspension tech and I'm also in charge of all the wiring...
