engine noise through amp

When I turn the gain up more than 3/4 of the way I get engine noise coming through my comps. I also max out on volume very early (47 on Avic D-2). I lowered the gain to about 1/2 way and it eliminates the engine noise and I can pretty much use all of my volume (57 with a max of 62) with no distortion. Is this typical. should I be getting engine noise dependent on the gain?
