I thought I'd shoot a mail over to test their level of support, and possibly gain insight about enclosing this subwoofer;

My email;

-----------------------------------------------------------------begin--

I'd also like to receive information on how to calculate the size of enclosure and port dimensions to achieve a desired given tuning frequency; *What frequency and portlength will provide the most flat

response from 29Hz up?

-------------------------------------------------------------------end--

Here's the response:

Thanks for th e-mail

Pioneer: *Check with Google for ingotmation and data on this topic.

(Q)3 If I have two dimensions for my enclosure how can I figure out the third dimension for a given box volume?

(A)3 Find out the total volume in cubic inches that your enclosure needs to be. Then multiply the two known dimensions (inches). The required box volume (in3) is then divided by the product of the two known

dimensions. Example: The recommended box volume for a given subwoofer is 2.0 cu ft. You know that the maximum height that your trunk will allow is 16”, the maximum width is 24”.

*1) Convert the 2.0 cu ft to cubic inches: 2.0 x 1728 = 3456 cu in.

*2) Multiply 16 (max. width) x 24 (max. height) = 384

*3) 3456/384 = 9.00”. This would be the depth of your enclosure.

This page will include a select choice of software that can be useful for designing and/or building a car audio system. As of yet there are two categories; Box design and tuning. A short description of

the program, and my comments are included. The .zip files are also available by anonymous ftp from the CAA ftp site ftp.caa.pair.com in the /pub/software/ subdirectory.

ENCLOSURE DESIGN

The software included below are tools for calculating the frequency response, and sometimes other factors, of a driver unit in a given enclosure. Most will attempt to calculate an "optimum" enclosure for

the driver, just remember that optimum will not nessecarily sound good, and may even kill the driver quickly!

If you don't know a thing about designing enclosures, it might be better to get someone who does do it for you. Or play around with the numbers, but ask someone to check your results before building.

SPKCAD LITE

This must be the king of shareware programs. Calculates freq. response, port velocity, impedance and cone excursion for sealed, ported and single-reflex bandpass boxes. Requires lots of info on the driver

though. Full version also has group delay, step response and compensation for room and baffle size effects, plus more bandpass alignments.

Runs under MS Windoze 3.1, 95 & NT.

PERFECT BOX

O.K. program for sealed and ported boxes. Calculates freq. response, cone excursion and max. SPL. Beware of the "optimum" enclosure the program generates. Can plot the freq. response of up to four driver/enclosure

combinations at the same time.

Runs under MS DOS.

perf.zip - 215 kb

BLAUBOX

Earlier commercial program, now freeware (well done Blaupunkt). However, you can only calculate freq. response, and the graphs are impossible to read accurately. I have also discovered errors concerning

low-Q woofers in ported boxes with regard to other programs.

However, it works for lots of different alignments, and has a box construction utility. You can also plot two different driver/enclosure combinations at once.

Runs under MS DOS.

*SYSTEM TUNING

Programs in this category are tools that can help in the tuning and adjusting of your system. The only stuff here yet are various FFT programs that can be used as RTA's with a mike, PC and soundcard. Remember

to compensate for the frequency dependant sensitivity of the microphone...

FREQ

The Freq program performs realtime FFT on a signal sampled by your PAS or SB compatible soundcard, and plots a bar chart of amplitude vs. frequency. Most factors are adjustable (sample rate, sampling window,

filters, gain etc. etc.).

Runs under MS-DOS

My reply

-----------------------------------------------------------------begin--

I'm surprised you failed to mention WinISD or BassBox Pro; *Instead, a

list of outdated software notated with information about the programs'

inaccuracies?

Aside from that, what are the recommended enclosures (per the

TS-W3004SPL's manual) "tuned" to? *Are they a 40Hz box, a 30Hz, etc.

Thanks.

PS, I'll be sharing your responses at forums.caraudio.com - a large

enthusiast community.
