At 73 years of age, even Supas mom gets more action than CA.com.

Anyways....

What are your guyz'z thoughts on jump packs? I have an old one laying around that I was contemplating buying a battery (20 or 22ah sla) at the cost of $40~. Is it worth buying a Chinese no name lithium based booster for $80+? I have a high compression V8 so the little mah units won't suffice.

I worked at a battery shop and replaced several of the boost pack batteries you're talking about.

It depends, how often do you use it and why do you use it?

Yes, it's cheap to swap the batteries out yourself. Newer lithium packs are smaller, lighter, and more powerful (although more expensive).

Some of the lithium ones are "idiot proof" and won't transfer current when hooked up with reverse polarity. They have extra protection circuitry built in besides breakers or fuses

I rarely use it, would like to have it just in case. From my understanding sla batteries are a bit more high maintenance in regards to charging intervals. I'd like a smaller lithium unit but I'm uncertain if they're worth the added cost.

If I'm looking at 20/22ah sla units, what would be the equivalent lithium unit? 20000mah? Or is it on a different "scale".

For "just in case", why do you think you need it? Just keep jumper cables in your vehicle.

SLA means "Sealed Lead Acid" which doesn't automatically mean AGM. All AGM batteries are SLA, but not all SLA batteries are AGM's. Like squares vs. rectangles.

They're just sealed so they don't spill and leak if you tip the jumper box over.

As far as charging, they're the same as all other lead-acid type batteries. Usually, the packs don't have good internal charging circuits. They're pretty basic, with set charging voltage and current. Like a laptop or cellphone, you don't want to leave it plugged in all the time or it will ruin the battery.

Often times, you can tell when somebody brought a pack in if they left it plugged in 24/7. The battery swells and bulges.

If you do choose to replace the battery, get a Christmas light timer and set your boost pack to only charge 4-8 hours a day (in order to maintain it).

If I was you, I would not get any sort of boost pack at all, here's why:

1. Just keep jumper cables in your trunk. If your battery dies when you're at the store, you won't have the jump pack anyways (unless you carry it around all the time in your vehicle). Find someone to jump you for free.

2. If it won't start at your house, jump it with your wife/girlfriend's vehicle or a neighbor's. If you live alone and are antisocial, get a battery charger with a "boost/jump" setting around 200 amps. If you invested your money in a good battery charger instead of a boost pack, you can trickle charge your battery when it's not in use to increase its life, as well as jump your vehicle when the battery does go bad.

3. I've got more reasons, but I feel like I've already typed a book and am now just ranting. If you want to know more still, I can add more to this thread or PM you.

CLIFS:

1. Don't get a lithium boost pack or replace your battery.

2. Keep jumper cables in your vehicle.

3. Invest in a good battery charger with trickle and jump settings instead.

Thanks for the thorough reply.

I always have cables in the car. This would be for those early morning starts in negative degree weather, or anytime really.. I live alone and I doubt neighbors would appreciate me waking them up at 5am for a jump start. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

At the very least spending the $40 on a battery is a lot less then I'd lose in pay for missing a day of work.

I'm going to look into the chargers w/ the boost, I can see that being a good alternative.

No problem. When I'm at home, I used to just put my batteries on trickle overnight.

Theoretically, trickle charging them regularly is the best thing you can do for longevity.

Good luck with your search

I throw mine on the charger for a good full charge every other month so I don't have much trouble. But if it's going to give me trouble it'll be when it's cold. My charger doesn't work right below 25 degrees and my block heater took a poop on me last winter. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I'll figure it all out. Thank you, sweetie.

Was going to but don't want the hammer, been here too long. I hear maf has some...If it's still around.
MAF has tons of noodz, but it's deader than a doornail. I haven't been there in a year, but when I left it could be a week before the top 10 threads changed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
