ebay question

a couple days ago i was bidding on an MTX amp that had a reserve. the auction ended and the reserve price was never met. i e-mailed him immediately and made him another offer.. 85 dollars shipped. he agreed and told me to send the paypal payment. what im wondering is cant he just walk off with the money and not send me anything since the ebay auction ended and no one technically won it? i emailed him bacc and asked him to put the item bacc on ebay so i could commit to buy it and have a contract to bac me up that i bought it. sound good? or is that unnecessary?
Yes, it is in your best interest to get the seller to relist the item with a Buy It Now price equal to the agreed upon amount and notify you immediately when the listing goes active. Alternatively the seller can set up a listing where you'll be the only person authorized to place a bid in the first place (a Private Auction). eBay warns against what they refer to as off-site transactions in a myriad of places - in the eBay user agreement, in the PayPal (which is owned by eBay) user agreement, and in countless other places all around the website as they cannot legally offer any sort of protection for these transactions. (Off-site transactions being defined as any sale/trade that does not transpire directly off of an auction listing)

I see tons of negative remarks directed at eBay by various posters on this forum and quite frankly, I do not particularly understand why. If you'll take the time to do a bit of research both into the item(s) you're wanting to buy and the seller(s) you're considering buying from you can almost guarantee yourself not to get scammed. I've spent a ton of money on eBay and haven't had the first problem yet ~ but I'm very picky about the sellers I do business with. Maybe that's the difference.

Exactly. If you are not an idiot, and do not buy form sellers with negative feedback, and if you ask question about the items and other things like that, you will be safe. I also have spent $1000's of dollars on eBay, and havent had a problem.

I am more weary about buying things off the forums then buying from eBay.
