DVC vs. SVC

So in my continuing education of almost worthless information...

Why do Dual Voice Coil subs exist? Is it merely to give you more wiring options when you are building your system? As far as I know, there should be no difference in power handling of the two, and as far as sound goes (frequencies) I doubt if there is a discernable difference in the two.

So why are they here. C'mon I know someone knows. Hopefully alot of someones know.

mainly wirin options and and increase in power handling. though the latter isn't just vc dependent.

hopefully dan can find this and explain.....or mike or nick.....

additional VC's can be added for several reasons. wiring optiopns being one of the main reasons, but it also goes deeper into woofer design theory. the extra wire is going to put more turns in the gap and could increase Bl, the added mass is going to affect the Qts, Fs, Vas, etc.

also, the way you wire the coils can affect some of the parameters. two coils wired in parallel will increase Bl, affect efficiency and the Qte. these changes will be slight and perhaps not noticable to the ear, but in a competition SPL vehicle they can make a difference.

mmm, which brings up another question.

I've read a few topics on amp strapping. I understand the basic concept, but can someone explain how and why it works? Same principle as parallell wiring? i dunno.

same principle as bridging channels together.

two amps with the same signal. one is set up as the slave and the other the master, master jumps the signal; to the slave and the two amps work as one. doubles your power, and just like bridging, it raises your lowest possible impedence load to double the previous. ie, if they were stable to 1 ohm previously, they are now only stable to 2 ohms.

each individual amp is still stable to 1 ohm, but the final load of the subs is 2x the minimum of the individual amp.

just wanted to make sure its clear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
