DVC vs. 2 subs

I'm looking into subs, and I've pretty much narrowed it down to a couple choices. I'll probably either get the Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1d (Dual Voice Coils) or 2 JBL GTO Series GT120. I'm wondering what people think about DVC vs 2 subs (for 2-ohms).

I know the Perfect is a excellent quality sub, and will handle more power than I can wave a stick at, but I've heard good things about the JBL, and having 2 seperate entities of bass pounding fun in the back would be pimpin', but I'd lose a bit of trunk space, but I have more than enough space, but the Infinity would own, and I'd have a complete Infinity system. But the DVC wouldn't be as upgradeable...

As you can see, I'm somewhat torn...help me out

Thanks,

Adam

Have you considered getting two DVC's? I'm no expert at all, but as far as I know you can definitely run dual DVC subs. I think they're usually dual 4-ohm voice coils, so you'd be running a 1-ohm load and would need to get a 1-ohm stable amp, but it can be done and is pretty common I think.

One dual voice coil sub cannot "compete" against two subs. A voice coil doesn't move air, it merely allows flexibility in wiring schematics. So "dual voice coil" subs merely seperate the power from the amplifier into two coils.

So, having dual voice coils doesn't increase the effectiveness (true power handling) of the sub itself.

Maybe you should sell him some awesome subs from your website, huh Ptown?

Thanks for the responses.

My bottleneck WILL be my amp, regardless.

I know a guy who has the perfect w/ a single voice coil, and a Kenwood 5-channel (not sure which, but not the excelon) and his just pounds like mad.

The sensitivity is higher, and frequency response is lower on the Infinity, and the power handling of 1 of the Infinities is better than 1 of the JBLs. I list some stats...

JBL Infinity

Impedance 4 ohms 4 ohms

Cone Material Polypropylene Aluminum

Surround Material Butyl rubber Butyl rubber

Free-Air No Yes

Dual Voice Coil No Yes

Sensitivity 93dB 96dB

Frequency Response 23 - 0.45k Hz 18 - 0.2k Hz

RMS Power Range (Watts) 55-250 75-350

Peak Power Handling (Watts) 1000 1400

Qts 0.43 0.38

Xmax (millimeters) 12.5 14.15

Parts Warranty 1 Year 3 Years

Labor Warranty 1 Year 3 Years

All in all, the Infinity is built better, but costs more (imagine that)

So, I can afford 2 JBLs or 1 Infinity

But it sounds like the 2 JBLs will be the way to go, if I'm not mistaken?

I can get the two JBLs for $150 on crutchfield (maybe less elsewhere) and the Perfect for $200 /w box once again on crutchfield, and once again I might be able to get a better deal from this guy I know who owns a chain of car stereo stores.

I'm not looking to enter competitions or anything, I just want a good, reliable system that will pound on the 250ish watts I feed it.
