I've always been leary when buying refurbished stuff, but i would never hesitate to buy a freshly reconed sub. So my question is, is a refurbed subwoofer nothing more than a reconed sub?

Example. When buying subs on ebay, they use the term refurbished. Which makes me leary.

On here, we use the term reconed. Which is same motor/basket, new everything else.

Orly? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif and ive been sending em more than twice their RMS power their entire life. Looks like my new box will be their coffin. Oh wellz, if one goes, ill kill the other. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/patriotic.gif.b47a6e0394a3738334c387bdf79409f4.gif

You shouldn't assume 'refurb' means 'recone'. Nothing states they must be reconed to state refurbed, so clearly there are people/businesses out there that will advertise refurb without having done a recone. Its not illegal, its not even unethical, most people dont even know what a recone is so its not like these guys are trying to pull a fast one. I think buying refurbs means using common sense, if you are buying from a (relatively) large and reputable company, you can prolly count on a 'refurb' to be good as new (or close). But if you are buying a 'refurb' from John and Steve's Garage Shop off ebay in some town half way across the continent, who knows...

...hey! my subs have about 400 hours on em. Subs dont really "wear out" do they?
Subs certainly do wear out. They have moving parts, moving parts fatigue over time, fatiguing parts turn into a worn out assembly (at some point). Suspension softens and loosens up, or gets brittle and breaks. Even voice coils that have been over saturated with excess power will show signs of fatigue over time. Oh yes, subs definitely wear out.

Well i know that suspensions and such will change over time... as ive noticed in the way my subs sound. I like them better with a little wear. But i was always under the impression that as long as they were maintained and the surrounds and such werent allowed to rot or be exposed to excessive sun that they would last a really long time. is 400 hours a long time. There have been days (many) where i played my subs for at least 6 hours in a day... most of those wangin my car apart. Oh well. They were **** good for the money. Some of the best subs ive owned. No problems, funny smells, and super clean output... not to mention less than 150 a piece ^_^

Everything you said there is true. But a 'really long time' is not forever. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The stuff will wear out. I believe the reason we dont see much of it today is due to how fast/often we upgrade. New technology and/or fads obsolete our old products long before they wear out (usually).
