Dual voice coil vs. single

Besides the extra flexibility in the wiring configuration and more power handling / sub, are there any real sound quality differences between a single and dual voice coil subwoofer? I recently blew my DVC sub (JL 10w6v2) and i have a chance to get really good deal on another sub but it's single a voice coil. It's a 4 ohm single while the i had the JL sub configered for 2 ohm. It is going to be powered by a JL 250/1 amp and since this amp puts out the same power between 1.5 and 4 ohm, will i be putting the same amount of power into a single voice coil sub if i just turn up the amplifier gain? I hope i worded all this right, please let me know thanks.

Won't notice a different in terms of sound quality if you plugged in the same sub in DVC or SVC trim.

Don't just "turn up the gain". Refer to the gain setting tutorial JL Audio has set out, and the modified version in our own Amplifier section. Properly set gains should help you get the most out of your new sub.

Well i just hooked up my new sub, MTX MSS1004 400 watt RMS. Compared to previous sub, this one sounds almost as good. I used to occasionally clip my amp with the JL sub @ 2ohm but now the new sub doesn't clip at all. I turned the gain up full temporary to see if it would clip but it didn't and it still sounded good. Slightly lower volume than the JL but for the price i paid which was soooo much cheaper i am very happy with my new sub!

Generally speaking, DVC and SVC like-model subs have the same power handling.
