Drove stick for the first time today...

Its weird driving different cars and seeing how different the clutches are.

For the OP who still needs to learn, if you are driving one car and having a hard time, possibly try a different car. For instance the Porsche 911 and my friends CTS-V were pretty tricky to drive. The clutches were very sensitive, and if you let it out a hair too far or a hair too fast, the car stalled. That girls Celica GTS was the same. But my Mustang (was just a V6) was super easy to drive, and when driving it easily, I saw great gas mileage. Cruising around town I would just put it in 5th gear and let it ride around 1300 RPM. That RPM gave me around 48-50mph, so it was perfect for most roads with a 45mph speed limit. My other friends Evo was pretty easy as was a GTO.

Then other cars like my friends old CRX might as well have been an automatic. Bone stock engine, but you just let the clutch out as fast as you wanted with any amount of gas and the car just took off. That car had around 275k on the stock clutch, so that probably explains it. I still have never driven a truck with a manual. I think it would be fun to have that super long shifter coming out of the floor and have that long throw to put it in gear.

Manual is cool, but after a while it loses its fun since you dont even think about it, its just a thing you automatically do, and the only time you do think about it is when you are trying to do something else like mess with your radio, get something out of your pocket, use your phone, swap CDs, eat something, hold a drink, etc. It is nice to get better gas mileage and have cheaper work done on your transmission, though.

Just curious, but has anyone here ever driven an old car where the shifter is on the steering column? Is it as much of a pain as it seems? I prefer my truck (Avalanche) and most other SUVs and trucks having the shifter on the column, but its automatic, so it never gets touched. One of those old 3 on the tree seems like a total PITA.

I got a great deal on a 96 Toyota Supra with built engine pushing 700HP on a OS Giken triple plate clutch 6 speed. I had never driven a stick shift a day in my life and none of my friends in Japan had stickshifts so I learned how to drive it by pulling out of the car lot and hitting up the city and stalling the sh*t out of it quite a few times.
But OP, I think I saw in another post you stated you were getting a newer Honda Civic. If so then you will love the clutch on it. When I got back to the states I bough an 08 Accord Coupe and loved the clutch on it. Really smooth, forgiving and large engagement point so you wont mess up and stall out too often
Good to hear. I'm checking it out today once I get off work. But i can't test drive since I still don't know it enough.

i drove my grandpas old chevy truck with the 3 on the tree. complete pain in my ass. my auto went out in my bird a couple weeks ago. been pushin pops 88 s-10. easy breezy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif took a day or so to get used to driving it again.

I like to put it in gear and go where I need to go. The hell with all the shifting BS. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
Until you encounter what has happened to me...I'd rather spend 200 bucks not 2000 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Not like a transmission goes out every day. But thats a nice upgrade from the Saturn, so you should be happy. I still wouldnt buy a manual *****. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

you must not be very good at shifting, it doesn't bother you at all if your good at it.

Most people dont even know what a manual ****** looks like or have any clue on how to drive it. I am honestly a little more attracted to a girl who drives a stick.

I've been driving manual ATV and dirtbikes for half my life or so, and much prefer it there, though it is nice to be able to cruise on an auto every now and then. An ex of mine had an 87' Accord that I got pretty comfy driving standard on, though the clutch had to be hammered to the floor. And I've driven a friend's Scion xD standard before. As for myself, I've never owned one. I wanted my '09 Hyundai Elantra to be stick, but my mom was doing the down payment and wouldn't let me. Frankly, I'm glad I didn't. For most of you, manual may be nice, but living in southern California and dealing with some of the worst traffic in the nation on a daily commute, it would have just been a nightmare. The only time I'd prefer a manual is when I'm not in traffic, and trying to save gas. It'd be nice to have a 5 speed, and have more control of my gears... I have a load of trouble trying to get my car from 3rd to 4th.

Gonna have to pay it off through college though. And you would get better gas mileage, more control of your car, and cars that are stick shift are usually cheaper than autos //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

They are kinda different. One of the old school tricks was to flip the shifter over to the other side of the steering column so the patttern was upside down. This way you were pulling the shifter down. It was supposed to get you faster shifts when drag racing back in the day.

I learned on a 89 Honda TRX 250r four-wheeler when I in 3rd grade. Once you get the concept down it isn't bad. I drove alot of farm trucks but never had a manual car that I got to drive much til I got a 370Z about 18 months ago.
