There is no direct shot. He either has to go north or south, and there could be snow in either region.

I80 is a much more direct route to SF than I40 is. But I agree that going south is no guarantee is missing snow. See my above story of going out of my way to miss snow by taking I40, only to be socked in by a blizzard while I80 never saw a flake of snow from it.
