Downshifting question.

I just took my drivers test, and the lady at the DMV told me u cannot put it in neutral when your coming to a stop. You can either downshift, or leav it in gear until u stop then go into first. but she said u cannot go into nuetral..i could be wrong tho
she is full of shit

even if your car is an automatic, putting the vehicle in neutral just separates the front pump from the rear. there is little if any load on the transmission itself

it is actually supposed to be against the law to come to a stop in neutral. read that in my owners manual. But who stands behind such a stupid law!!!

lol I wanna see somebody get pulled over for that.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Nope"

"You were in neutral when you rolled to that stop sign. I'm placing you under arrest for failure to leave your vehicle in gear upon coming to a stop"

i dont drive in snow so i cant say anything there. In snow though i would hammer nail in all my tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FTMFW
lol.....flat tires give you more surface area on the road:fyi://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

i just started driving a stick in december. my car is a six speed 4-cylinder, and i'm constantly shifting... one thing ive noticed when i'm driving is that when i up shift, my rpms rise until i get it in gear, i'm guessing i'm just staying on the gas a bit too long. should i completely let off the gas right before i press the clutch in or is it ok to keep my foot on the gas a little?

you need to let off completely to rev match....aka, bring the rpm down to the shift point

new learners make me laugh when it comes to driving a stick. they all make it so complicated.

i learned on my dads early 90's duster. 3.0L V6 and a 5speed. not crazy fast by any means, but i'd been in the car with him a few times when he got on it and it was quick. i stalled once because i was too worried about burning out. after that the only times i've ever stalled is when there was an issue with a car, like low idle or something.

every other aspect of manual ***** came naturally. like downshifting for accelleration or stopping...

I'm wanting to clear some things up on down shifting. While driving on streets and highways, Is it ok to put it in neutral and use the brakes to come to a stop? The other thing is on the highway when passing someone when you're in say 5th gear and you want to pass you slow down to a certain RPM, downshift, merge in the next lane then speed up back up to 5th. I was watching this video.

No, it's not OK. First, it's illegal in some states and provinces. Second, you should be using your drivetrain's natural friction to slow you down to reduce wear on your brakes, reducing the number of repairs and operating costs of your vehicle.
n00bx.

Why would you slow down to a "certain RPM" ? Unless your car has no headroom in 5th at highway speeds (most cars will be between 1500-3000 RPM in 5th at 60 MPH, so they should have plenty of headroom), there's no need to slow down before you downshift.

You'll wear out your synchros faster if you're holding the gas while shifting.
