Downfiring subs

My son wants to put a box in his Ford Ranger big cab, and point it at the floor. This way the back side of the box becomes a subfloor (no pun intended) so he doesn't lose storage space. My question is how far off the floor have you guys mounted dowfiring subs and had them work well? An inch? Two? It'll be a pair of 8's.

had 2 12's 2.5" off floor in a tahoe. no issues and sounded great

id do about 3" off the floor so the surrounds don't get damaged...if its ported the port will need about 6"s to load though
