Down to Three

The question is: "What do you want from your choice?" Do you want the sub to belt out the most SPL? Do you want the sub to hit retarded low notes? What kind of power do you have to push your choice?

All 3 of them are hyper in-sensitive; meaning that they all have a low sensitivity rating. None of them come with a stiff suspension, so you are not comparing apples to oranges either. The ///\LPINE Type X has an 81dB 1w/1m sensitivity rating. Center channel speakers are higher than that! The W6V2 has a >84dB 1w/1m sensitivity rating. Still sub normal for a current 10" subwoofer average sensitivity rating. I could not download the specs for a Boston, but after reading their prompting of a sealed 0.5 cubic foot enclosure, it will not be high either. So your list of choices leads me to believe that you are after a small sealed enclosure due to "mounting room?" Help us out with the answers and we can help you with a good choice for your particular needs.

I've heard the W6v2s, I have not heard the other two but coming from an engineering stand point, I already know how they sound and how they perform. Tonality in the upper frequency range ofcoarse will be different but if he wants SQ, he would not be playing 180Hz with his sub anyway. I'm interested in his response to those questions though.

Thank you..I will try to answer your questions....1.) I want the sub to have great SQ, but also punch you in your chest (or have the capability to do so), play very clean, not distort, and play low notes very well. 2.) I have 500 watts rms for the sub...(the amp says 700 watts rms, but I think they overrated it) It is also being bridge to get that amount....I know I have done this backwards, but I already have the box, and it is sealed .65 cu. ft.....VereChronicus - I am not sure what all that means that you said, but I also found some specs on two of the subs that I do not know what they mean, but they vary significantly...They are - Boston Acoustics G5 10" DVC = VAS 29.77, FS 32.37, QTS 0.47, XMAX 15mm....and the Alpine Type X DVC = VAS 17, FS 29, QTS 0.63, XMAX 19.1mm....I have no idea what those mean, so if you could explain them in simple terms, and how they describe the subs, I would greatly appreciate it...The wiring is going to be another problem, but I guess we will get to that once we decide which sub will work...Thank you guys.

Those stats won't really tell you anything about its ability to punch you in the chest. Xmax just tells you how much the voice coil overhangs the gap height on both sides. Nothing more than a physical measurement of two parts in the sub. The Vas tells you how many liters of air it takes to equal the subwoofers suspension springiness. The Fs tells you what frequency the moving parts naturally resonate at. The lower the Fs, normally the higher the moving parts weigh in relation to the stiffness of the suspension that supports and aligns it. Qts is a product of multiple systems functions within the speaker as a whole, it gives you a round-a-bout idea of what kind of enclosure the sub was made for or accidentally came to be in many cases (just not in these). For very low frequency extension in a small sealed box like yours, which will come closer to 0.5 cubic foot after subwoofer displacement, the Type X has the stats that better suit low frequency extension, BUT....as in almost every case, the sensitivity is very low, meaning that to compare the Type X to the JL W6v2 in output, you will have to have double the amplifier power to get the same SPL as the JL. With those subs, when you have a 3dB+ sensitivity variance, unless they are suspension limited, the more sensitive sub will utlimately get louder in an SQ situation since you won't be "SQing" anything with a sub being powered over 500w. The sub output level would be well over that of an SQ listening level. Those subs are all pretty equal and will perform very much alike in that small sealed enclosure you have. I would recommend that you find the SPL rating or sensitivity rating of the Boston sub and choose your sub out of the three by that number. The higher the sensitivity of these three drivers, the more output you'll get in the end from your limited amplifier power. You want that amp to work as little as possible to get maximum results and the highest sensitivity driver will do just that. Have a great time with whatever you choose.
