The four are accused of kidnapping, beating, raping and killing Channon Christian, 21, and her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23.

Judge Richard Baumgartner has been careful in the case to ensure that each defendant is represented by attorneys who are "death certified," a label under state law that means they are experienced enough to represent a defendant facing the death penalty.

So far, Assistant District Attorney General Bill Crabtree has not filed notice of an intent to seek the death penalty. However, little else has been filed in the case either.
