Doing your own work

I was reading another thread and realized that FOR ME, I'm at mercy of the local shops around here as I dont have a clue how to build an enclosure or install a system nor do I have the tools to do so. Even if I did find someone to show me how to do it, how in the hell would I know if they knew what they were doing? I mean anyone could make a box that looked good couldn't they?

Forget doing anything electrical,& tuning my system, that's just way too much to comprehend.

It makes my head spin to here you guys talking about freq, db, hz....

I would like to have a ported box, but since I cant build it myself I have to allow the shop that I normally go to, to have it done. I could have someone build if for me and have it shipped, but that's more of a hassle for me than just going to the shop and having them do it.

Anyway this is not about me having an enclosure built,or a sys put in, I just wanted to know how some of you guys got started building, and installing your own stuff, and would you say it was worth it(ex. if it only costs a qtr of what a shop charges, but takes a ton of time, then for me that's not worth it)?

I'd just assume pay the shop that I'm comfortable with and be done with it, as I could be doing other things with the time. I do wish they were cheaper but what can I do about that.

Now if I got to the point where some of you are, and could have a system put in after only a couple of hours then maybe.

Then you'll continue to be at the mercy of local shops //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

actually i learned how to do an amp install when the bb installer told my dad what wires to hook up to where on the amp. then i got to messing aroudn with headunit harnesses. not complicated at all.

still can't do boxes/glass work. but i can run wires, do headunits, and amps (just teh basics, nothing complicated/fancy). it's really not that hard.

I learned how to do all the stuff I know how to do now, by helping my friend work on his car on more than one occasion.

I learned to build my owned sealed boxes on my own. Its really not hard. Just gotta be good at math and whatnot.

I havent really given building a ported box a shot yet, because I had mine built because I needed it sooner.

I can wire up my amps and stuff fairly quick now. Wire subs up. Run and hide wire. IKnstalling a HU for me is a breeze now. I dont know about an indash dvd player or any of that yet.

I can do alot of stuff when it comes to car audio. But I am sure there are more people out there that can do better than me and faster. Along with doing more things thatn I can.

But I am learning

I'm in the middle of my first box right now. It's harder than I thought it was going to be. And as for wiring I have no clue how to do that either.
I'd like to be in the middle of her butt cheeks (the girl in his avatar ^^^).

Now that I got that out of the way, I have a friend who is a mechanic so I figure he could help me run the wires & hide them & stuff. Hooking everything up is elementary because most of it is color coded. The hardest thing is building ported boxes and cutting into the car's interior.

i usually pay for a basic install (wire fishing, etc.) and then customize it and upgrade it over time.

I just have motivational problems getting started, and seeing what a shitty job most shops do is motivation for me to improve it.

I hate running speaker wires, tho, so i don't mind paying someone to do it.

I started very young with a love for electronics and music, so i started understanding how to wire a system by the time i was around 12. Then about two years ago i wanted to learn how to build proper ported boxes and i've learned a good bit of that through research and building about 5 of them. Now i'm currently working on mastering the art of fiberglass. My newest box is pretty sweet and i hope to post pics of it this weekend. and as for the wood working i've worked on and around construction sites since i was little with my dad so i learned that early on. so in my oppinion installing/building your own system is worth the satisfaction of completing it, and the only way to learn how to do it is through research and experience.
