Does this seem overpriced?

Boston Acoustics, all their subs are under rated in terms of power handling, sq and popularity. The prices are great on them right now because BA stopped making car audio products so retailers are trying to get rid of their stock
Now THAT'S a brand I know. I'll call on monday to see if they have any in stock.

wow both shops are really trying to hose you bad .there is alot better for the money ,most name brand equipment is very high priced and ok at best most isn't even very good .if you but from a vendor on the forum or even online you'll get better stuff for the money you spend .look at american bass sundown dc soundlabs, ssa ,fi, cdt,& dayton just to name a few

Car toys was going to make the box out of fiberglass and a tiny bit of wood. The other place was going to be all wood. The owner from the 2nd place said an all wood enclosure sounds better. I just don't want it to be too heavy considering my car is 3100lbs and I don't want to make it too much heavier.
JL is premium priced equipment. Quality is good, but 4X better than Kicker to justify the 4X price..... probalby not. I really like the JBL/Infinity stuff. For lower power applications I find it works great. Low end JL isn't worth touching at any price, so if you're not into their higher lines for that price don't even consider it.

Materials for fiberglass are expensive and it is very labor intensive. If they have some examples of their work, it looks good, and you care about looks, fiberglass box may make you happy... Properly done fiberglass or wood should do the same thing.

You may want to ask both shops if they will install equipment you buy elsewhere. Part of what you're paying for buying retail from a shop is their service. If something goes wrong, do you have to uninstall something and try to chase down warranty from an online retailer, or will the shop just swap you out right there? (aslo worth asking what their policy is).

Holy crap that first one was high. But dealers are out to make money. I talked to a couple dealers and walked away with my head spinning . You can save a lot of money buying online, even more if your willing to buy used.

Call TNT in Victoria and check out their pricing. Ask for Mark (owner)or Shaun(manager). They like to do lots of glass work though, but they do some very impressive work with wood and/or glass.
