does the box matter?

i have a bandpass box for 2 12" subs that takes up a lot of room in my trunk and i was wondering if there is a different box i could get thats smaller without loseing any performance. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ( im new to car audio)

Dont worry about loosing performance if you switch to sealed or ported..

if you still want the punch, go ported... bandpass is the worst in the worl and is a big //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nono.gif.eca61d170185779e0921b0faa9704973.gif ...... so get ridda that bandpass and save your ears as ss3079 would say

you arent gonna get more spl but a hell of alot more sq the bandpass is about the loudest box you can get unless you can get a good ported box made but I dont think most people are that skilled lol or just have someone make you one. The sealed will give you good overall performance and will sound 10 times clearer.

would a sealed box or ported be smaller too? cuz the bandpass now takes up way too much room. and a sealed or ported box wouldnt make my trunk rattle less or anything would it? if you have any tips on how to get rid of rattles id appreaciate them. thanks

The size of the box depends on what volume of air it needs in the box. A sealed might be smaller, cuz it would require a small volume. I just depends on the subs and the manufacturer's specs.

As far as the vibrating trunk, you could use some Dynamat. Dynamat is a vibration dampering insulation that you would line along the inside of your trunk. Kinda like the insulation in the walls of a sound-proof room. Dynamat is hella expensive so you might wanna try finding an alternative. This one dude I know says Hi Temp Mastic (this industrial stuff contractors use) works well. You can find it here http://www.McMaster.com under dampering. Just type "Mastic" in the search box, it should bring it up. I dunno the prices, so you check.

sealed boxes are generally smaller....sound the best overall, but a good ported box will sound great too...i havent heard a bandpass that sounded good....

If your worryed about space lean towards a sealed box, but in my opponion ported sounds better ( just because you get more bass). But a ported will be bigger. And you CAN makea bandpass box sound good, you just have to know exactly what your doing, and at least have a little bit of experience, but if you buy a bandpass then thats a bad move, personally I think almost any,well made, homeade,box is better than a boughten one any day as long as it meets the subs requirements. But thats just my oppinion!
