Does it have to be an amp kit?

I'm working on my new sub install right now and I just finished the box and wiring up the drivers and stuff, and now I'm on ording my amp and wiring it up. Is it worth it to buy an amp kit? My dad had an idea of using some welding power cable or something (4 gauge) and just running that from the battery to the amp and stuff. Will that work as well as 4 ga. wiring from an amp kit I'd order?

4 gauge might be pretty flexible, I've got some 3/0 welding wire at the house and its not very flexible... Without the kit you're probably still going to have to buy a fuse and fuse holder
