True, paying off all of the debts will increase your score significantly. Once you are done paying off the debts, you should start building good credit. You may sign up for one credit card, but to tell you the truth...that is harder to maintain than a little bit. Since you've been helping your gf keep excellent credit, why don't you just piggy back off of her account? You can add your name to her credit card account and her good credit will build yours up. The more she uses her card and pays it off, the better your credit looks. Make sure the card that you use reports to all three credit buraeus. It will not affect her score one bit.

yeah the funny thing is I know so much more about credit and such than she does, she just had her act together earlier in the past, and I did not.(I used to have perfect credit from 17- to about 19 and a half years old)....im 22 now. I really screwed up bigtime(although it could be much worse.)...

I am in the middle of canceling her student visa card, and the only 2 other credit cards she has is a Bank of america "world points", and Just recently received a American Express Blu card cash(Figured we would get cash back etc). I just put my name on her account, and should receive a card shortly.
