does any one know how high of voltage a 97 honda civics electrical system can take?

Well, my Accord and your Civic have something In common. They will not charge very high they way they are now. The most Iv saw on my volt meter is like 13.2, and thats when I first start it up and 11.7-12.2 is around I usually charge when Im going down the highway. Reason being, our cars are equipped with Honda's ELD system. Basically, it is designed to help us get better fuel mileage. The computer only tells the alternator to charge up enough to keep us running, based on the electronics you have turned on (A/C, Heat, Headlights ect) The bad thing for us is, its only measured by factory things, like the things I just stated, so they car never knows that you have amps or anything since its not factory. Thanks to Heep_Hope_Alive you can fix this issue for $10 and a few hours of your time. I hope nobody minds that I post a link from SMD. By doing what this page tell you, this will let you get the voltage that you would out of a regular car. Im actually going to be ordering these parts in the next few days to do it myself. Ill post results when I do.

I was just considering it because I can only do a 180 amp alt and I'm getring an amp that puts out 10-12k I have 5 group 31's but I'm still not sure that's enough I felt if I had a charging system at 16v I'd at least drop to 14's and see over the amps potential just thoughts tho I'd have to buy new batts and have dc externally regulate my alt
