Does an Amp Split its power?

Have you ever hooked 4 tens to one amp? Seen it done. and did ever sub pound like no other.. yes. HOW in the Heck, does an amp know to split the power, OHokay, i wnat ... umm 250 watts down this wire and .. ahh i guess another 250 watts down this wire?
