Does a more expensive box actually sound better?

Prefab sealed boxes will sound just as good as a custom one. All you need to do is make sure its the right size, grab a bag of polyfill if needed, and make sure you seal off all the corners. The issue with prefab sealed boxes is that almost all of them are not sealed right in the corners so they have air leaks.

This is very true. A prefab sealed enclosure is not all bad at all. As said you will need to silicone all edges/corners on the inside of the enclosure. I would also silicone around the speaker terminal as the cheaper ones tend not to seal all that well.

In my experience SQ(again if there is such a thing when discussing low end) can be had with ported or sealed. The determining factor is what you want out of your application and what the subwoofer was designed for.

A general idea that sealed or ported is better then the other is not true, as it is 100% different for every application and person. Remember also that sound is subjective to the listener. So no one likes/wants the same thing.

I would go with the MTX sealed enclosure. Its a bit bigger than the cheaper one and likely built better as well. Ported prefab boxes **** due to ****** tuning, sealed ones arent bad if you seal them good.

Yea if you're going sealed, go prefab, just do as they've said and seal it up good. Make sure it's made of 3/4 mdf, and is of proper internal volume.

SQ can be had with either sealed or ported, it's entirely dependent on install and design. A true SQ car will take thousands of dollars to accomplish. So a simple sealed enclosure is not gonna make or break the difference unless you're willing to spend all the money on everything else. Now if you want an enclosure with tight, clean, and clear bass, that can't certainly be accomplished with ported. However since you do seem to be on a budget (impossible for a true SQ install), a sealed box can do fine.
