dodge caravan wiring

so i have a 1999 dodge caravan and i just got a kenwood kvt-512 in-dash dvd i already have a 12" audiobahn immortal with a 1600 watt power acoustics amp and a 8 fared cap to that amp i also have a rockford fosgate amp powering my door speakers anyways when i wired in my kenwood the red light in the front came on i contacted kenwood and they had told me that that light meant there was a short somewhere. i checked my wiring and everything is good but i do know that there is a short in my vehicle somewhere because my speedometer and rpm meter will drop to zero whenever it wants to. so i am just wondering if that could be the reason the kenwood will not work and what can i do to remedy this problem? all help is appreciated.

Did the radio that was in the car before the kenwood work?

How did you wire the kenwood ?

i have had a jvc in their worked perfectly and a sony worked perfectly. and i wired the kenwood right. even with the parking brake bypass.

i have the same vehicle and i know in mine i have a poor ground so i have to ground the headunit to the steel of the car. I dont know if that will help you but i know its a problem in my van that i had to fix.

i do not believe its the ground, because the hu gets power it just wil not let the screen come out or turn on whatsoever, but i will try that. i was thinking that i could just rewire the whole thing and bypass all the factory wiring does anyone know if that could work or any other suggestions?

it could work, but try what p3bumpin suggested and try a new ground. I've seen a lot of problems with systems and it's often a bad ground.

Your speedo/tach dropping out to zero probably isn't a short unless there are other gauges beyond that going out. I'd check for a damaged or loose speedometer cable on the transmission. It'll be a steel cable wrapped in hard black plasctic coming from your firewall into the ****** somewhere.

the temperature guage also drops to zero so i doubt that it is just a loose cable for the speedo/tach because they all happen at the same time and i will try changing the ground but in case that doesn't work are there anyother suggestions.
