Great post. Out of curiosity, do you read the Bible regularly? I'm not trying to prod you into an argument...I honestly want to know. Also, what brought you to the conclusion that religion is crap? Was it a human fault, or a God thing?
I am going to tell you a little story about organized religion. I grew up in a small community where a certain Catholic priest liked to molest altar boys. Well, the thing that really strikes me as odd is this priest had problems EVERYWHERE he went. Instead of stripping him of being a priest, he was just moved from community to community where they thought that a better eye could be kept on him. I don't want to go into how many friends of mine were ruined by this POS priest, but a lot of them were. All I can say is that I am glad I was never an altar servant in that community because my father was totally against it!

The thing that pisses me off the most is how he cost the Catholic church millions of dollars, and yet they did EVERYTHING they could to protect him. His legal fees were paid, he had special provisions in prison, and was able to be released WITHOUT having to notify those in his community that he is a *** offender. Last I heard, the focker was in trouble for molesting another kid.

Those in organized religion KNEW that he was doing bad things, and yet they did NOTHING to try to stop him. Kind of reminds me of those corrupt Popes throughout the ages.

My belief in God varies from day to day but I will say that organized religion is BS and I only step foot in churches for weddings and funerals.

As someone else stated earlier, it seems that most of the people who are disillusioned with religion grew up Catholic. There are many more "denominations" that are nothing like Catholicism. I'm glad that you aren't blaming God for what happened. The encouragement and support that you can receive from a Christ-centered congregation is unbelievable. But the key is for it to be Christ-centered, and not religion-centered, man-centered, or tradition-centered.

Someone please help me understand this, people here believe in God, but not religion.

So we fellowship together cause we all love and worship car audio, and want to be around others who love and worship car audio. We abide by all the rules of the forum and even adhere to most of the dogma about car audio, although we discuss it back and forth.

If you replace all the underlined words in that sentence with God, you have religion.

i think the distinction is actually between believing in the general idea of a creator(s) and the believing in some specific religious dogma/doctrine (which of course is undefendable)

Since you are inquisitive and are obviously intelligent (absolutely no sarcasm intended), please read a short book entitled "More Than a Carpenter" by Josh McDowell. He set out to scientifically disprove the Bible but ended up becoming a believer in Christ. If you are interested, pm me and I will send you the book myself.
I have no interest in disproving the bible. I have more interest in proving the things that actually happened, and disproving the things that were added or scewed by the corrupt in order to preserve their status in the world. I can't tell you how much I would like to get my hands on some of the lost books of the bible. I think if we had the entire thing, including the parts where the writers change their minds, people would realize that faith or religion or whatever is supposed to be a far more active undertaking. Simply relying on the same old passages to guide your life will kill any progress we are capable of.

And just to clarify, I do believe in Jesus. I just don't believe in him as a Messiah. If you look at the other major religions, they all have very prominant prophetic figures. If anything, I believe that Jesus was a prophet who attempted to inspire the masses through his martyrdom. I think that, if God, Satan, Heaven, and Hell all exist, it is up to the people to prove themselves by living good lives and bettering the world in some way. In a world full of so many choices, I have a hard time believing that believing in God and Jesus and saying "I'm sorry" before you kick it is enough.

There was a story in one of the Ancient Egyptian religions that I really liked (and no, I didn't steal this from The Bucket List). When you reached the gates of heaven, you were asked "Did your life bring you joy? Did your life bring joy to others?" If you could answer yes to both questions, you got in. I really think that should be enough.

Well, who do you think wrote the bible?
Are you aware that it has been translated and re-written COUNTLESS times throughout history?

What you are calling the 'word of god' are really the words of men. God didn't write that book.

Just a thought.
Yes i know it has bein re- written by men and all that stuff but i believe god realy gave men what to write in the bible.

Yes i do read the bible sometimes and pray at home i never go to church. I do my preachings personally.

Religion was created by men, Religions has to do nothing with God at all. Its a human thing. I would never again in my life mix God with religion.
