I believe that organized religion was dreamed up to keep man in line! I would like to think there is a higher power out there, but I have my days where I am unsure. As for the Bible, while there may be many true stories in it, there are MORE stories that have been debunked by science.
Oddly, I grew up Catholic and used to be a good Christian who went to church all the time thinking that some great reward awaited me in the future. Unfortunately, my wife getting sick and subsequently dying caused me to turn against organized religion. Even worse were the Bible thumping religious zealots who tried to get me to join their BS churches after my wife died.

No, I am talking about more specific things, such as sleeping with your brother's wife if he should die. Those kinds of things. Give the "unclean" food to the stranger or alien....
The more I learn about God from the conduit of Christianity, the more I dislike him.

The examples that you gave are a perfect illustration. They are Old Testament, products of the pre-Christ Jewish culture. Even in the New Testament, not everything is to be taken literally. Jesus says that if your eye causes you to sin, that you should gouge it out, for it is better to go through life with one eye than to be denied entrance to the kingdom of Heaven. The message is that if something causes you to stumble, you should distance yourself from it. Jesus taught in parables, and gave examples that have to be examined in their original context.

But parables create the opportunity for interpretation. And that is where I take issue. Jesus could have easily said, "distance yourself from things that seperate you from Me. Here is a list of things." But no, the Bible is filled with obfusgatory language.

There were many more Christians than deists... Don't you think that God in His sovereignty could use the men who established this nation whether they believe in Him or not. Deists are the same as modern day people who know there is a God but think they are to smart for the bible. The entire point of our nation is to support Israel. That is the only reason America is the powerhouse that it is. If we turn our backs on Israel then you can bet on it that America as we know it will disappear.

I did say that wrong... Along with being a safe place for His children to worship Him and be disciples of His message to the "ends" of the earth, He also allowed America to become a country and thrive because we support Israel. My bad.

I will always believe in God. I might not be able to understand everything about God, but that's perfectly fine. Some people just think too much about it and can't accept it.
