The examples that you gave are a perfect illustration. They are Old Testament, products of the pre-Christ Jewish culture. Even in the New Testament, not everything is to be taken literally. Jesus says that if your eye causes you to sin, that you should gouge it out, for it is better to go through life with one eye than to be denied entrance to the kingdom of Heaven. The message is that if something causes you to stumble, you should distance yourself from it. Jesus taught in parables, and gave examples that have to be examined in their original context.
