I will start off by saying that I am agnostic. I don't believe in god, but I understand why people do.
I was just reading the new accident thread, and came to the part where "god was watching him." If you really believe this, do you think god would have let this happen?
Let's say you are in New York, and you are about to get mugged, then shot and killed. If god were "watching" you, do you think he would let the bullet hit you? It should stop in mid-air right in front of you, right? or god wouldn't let the muggers gun work at all. Or god would smyte the mugger somehow before he even began?
basically, I want to know why you believe in god.
I don't believe in god because I have grown up being a very scientific person. I find an explanation for everything. The bible is a book of stories that have been translated over and over again, more than likely most of them are fables to begin with. Most people who claim that can change me just give up.
First off you are not agnostic if you do not believe in God. You are an atheist. Agnostic means that you don't believe that there is any way to know that there is a God. Atheism is believing that there is no God. Anyway, I can't believe I jumped in this thread this late, but I would like to answer your question.
You say that you are a very scientific person, and if you know anything about the beginning of the universe, you would see that there clearly is a God. Read a book called "The Fingerprint of God" by Hugh Ross, you will not be disappointed. Also, a good book is "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. If you want to read great books about God, read C.S. Lewis, he was an atheist most of his life, until God convinced otherwise.
The mere fact that everyone has a concept inside them of good and evil proves the existence of God. If there was not a God, then we are just animals walking around, and our life is pointless and has no meaning to it. Therefore, if I were to kill you, it wouldn't matter, someone would replace you eventually, no one would care. But would you let me kill you? NO, because you truly believe that it is wrong and you truly value you your life for what it is. So why do we think that we have somewhat importance? Because that is how God made us, in His image.
I could go on forever talking about stuff but I would like to address your question about "God watching him".
The fact is, there is sin in the world. Does God like it? NO. It was brought into this world during the beginning of Adam and Eve. The Bible says, however, that God does not know evil. Evil is in the world because of the devil and because of us humans. We are naturally sinful. Therre is spiritual warfare going on, even in my life, it is a constant battle between my flesh and the Holy Spirit that lives within me. God just allows sin to go on during the time being, if he wanted to, he could stop it, however, he will when the time comes. That is, the creation of the new earth and the new heavens where there will be no more sin.
Anyway, why do I believe in God? I got saved last year, so I have been a "Christian"(a term that is very misunderstood in our society today) for a little over a year now. I believe that God is sovereign and in control of everything. I believe that it is God who changes hearts and that we do not choose God on our own. I am basically Calvinistic in my views.
