Some of the major properties of a cable would be its resistance ®, inductance (L), and capacitance ©. Significantly change any of these and you'll end up with a different sound - in effect, the cable will be acting like a filter.

There's nothing particularly wrong with unshielded interconnects, if you don't have noise problems. I've seen people make cables out of Cat5 and it works fine.

cat 5 wire is very tiny, i have used it for super low voltage application, like led lights and control wires. i dont think i would use it for signal wire tho.

how low are we talking? i don't see me ever pushing more than 5-6v for signal. this was just a thought.

My simbilink cables are made out of cat5, and i have no noise...it is a balanced input tho so thats really the reason

I think the general idea is, as long as they are built well enough to not fall apart, the sound is the same.

They're not all the same. But a well made $15 set will do the job, never spent more than $25 on a set myself. $100 for 1 set of RCAs seem more like an ego thing than a need.

Why not just get those RCAs that go for like $20k? Thats chump change. I forget the link to the store catalog with them.
