all in the salt lake area, the wrench-it center is the place to go....always wanted a place to go and work on my car. i just went over there to check it out, and ended up taking a tour. i will totally be back.

If you've ever heard Click and Clack on NPR, those guys got their public start in Cambridge with something called the Good News Garage. Just like what the OP is describing - great equipment and facility and experienced mechanics walking around to offer guidance and keep customers from killing themselves. I think liability problems got the better of them since it only seemed to last a few years. That or maybe they decided it was more fun to talk on the radio than it was to deal with knuckleheads everyday.
